Kachina Masks
A Hopi Kachina doll is a religious icon used to teach children about their religion. It is not a plaything and only certain Hopi artists trained in the art of their creation and symbolism can make a Hopi Kachina. A Kachina does not have the same religious significance for Navajos so a Navajo Kachina is generally created with respect for tradition but designed to be sold in the shops in and around their tribal areas.
It is these Navajo Kachina dolls that inspired me to create this series of colorful masks. |
